4x4 Snorkel Fitting

4x4 Snorkels: Here’s Why You Need One

Contrary to popular belief, a 4x4 snorkel fitting isn’t just for crossing rivers and waterways. At KBI Offroad, we understand the value and importance of a safari snorkel installation on any 4WD destined for offroad use. That’s why they’re one of the first accessories we suggest for your car when you’re considering modifications. We’ve put together a few reasons why you should consider adding a 4x4 snorkel fitting to your offroad kit.

The Benefits of A 4x4 Snorkel

If you’re wondering what a snorkel could do to improve your offroad experience, here are a handful of advantages to installing a high-quality 4WD snorkel.

  • Prevents dust from clogging the engine. Snorkels elevate the air intake, so the particle concentration is lower. Keeping your engine dust-free means the filter will stay cleaner and you’ll achieve more airflow.

  • Drive through waterways. Your snorkel’s elevated intake provides a barrier between the engine and the water, allowing your engine to function normally without water damage. Before crossing any deep water, however, bring your car into KBI Offroad so we can make sure everything is sealed and watertight, so you don’t get any leaks.

  • Increased engine performance. Whether on-road or offroad, your snorkel will encourage cool, clean air to circulate in the engine, maximising your power and performance.

  • Improved fuel efficiency. By preventing dust, water, and microparticles from entering the engine, your snorkel increases your car’s fuel efficiency!

How to Choose the Right Safari Snorkel

There are so many factory and aftermarket snorkels available; it can be overwhelming trying to choose the right one for your vehicle. Fortunately, the team at KBI Offroad aren’t going to leave you scratching your head. We’re here to provide you with advice and information that will help you choose the very best choice for your car.

  • Materials

    • LLDPE plastic. This is the most common option, as it’s a strong, durable plastic that looks good on any vehicle.

    • PVC plastic.  This is a very low-budget option that’ll do the trick temporarily. However, the team at KBI Offroad wouldn’t recommend it.

    • Stainless steel. These snorkels are the most expensive option, and they’re beloved for their superior durability and shiny appearance. However, prolonged offroad use tends to leave them scratched and marked, detracting from their aesthetic.

    • Mild steel. This is an option for those wanting to use steel but not wanting to fork out for a stainless steel 4x4 snorkel fitting. Mild steel snorkels are prone to rust after a while, so they’ll need to be galvanised, which can make them look less attractive.

  • Snorkel heads

    • Air ram head. This snorkel is designed to force heavier dust and water particles against the walls where they drop down and are expelled through the vents. Filtered air is ‘rammed’ down to the engine, cooling it and improving performance.

    • Vortex head. These snorkels use centrifugal force to push dirt and water out to the outer chambers and clean air down the body of the snorkel. Vortex heads are great for thick dust conditions.

    • Mushroom head. Working much like the vortex head, the key difference is that the mushroom head expels dust immediately rather than trapping it. It’s also a better option for preventing water intake due to its more enclosed design.

  • Quality vs. affordability. A snorkel is such a vital piece of offroad equipment that you really shouldn’t compromise on quality. We’d suggest deciding your budget beforehand and picking the very best quality you can afford.
